Poison Oak is a traditional press dedicated not only to publishing memorable books with intoxicating emotions and real-life characters, but also to providing authors with top-tier on-hand marketing support to reach those who will fall in love with their story.

-No up-front costs. We operate as a small traditional press. We cover all upfront production and publishing costs. Authors are never asked to pay out of pocket.

-Campaigns and Marketing Support like you have never seen. With each book we set up, take care of, and create all pre-order campaigns with special editions, tiers with merchandise, cover reveal teams, and ARC teams, and manage them. We also house, package, and ship these orders, and cover the website and maintenance. This is unique to Poison Oak Press and is rarely offered by traditional/and or small presses.

-One-on-one marketing support. We want your manuscript to reach its potential with crafted pre-order campaign plans and one-on-one support, so if desired, your marketing skills can be as fine-tuned as your writing.

What Makes Our Books Unique?

Unlike many other traditional publishing companies, we put a lot of energy and effort into our authors' marketing and campaign orders. We offer monthly 1:1 calls and audits with our authors to go over their accounts, answer any questions, as well as provide insights and ideas. We also provide space to ship and package orders, including more freebies, incentives, and opportunities for growth in sales, such as apparel, artwork, and other fun bookish goodies, with any preorder campaigns. We help our authors set up their social media accounts and create an initial marketing plan to prepare for preorders and to get newsletter subscribers to get the most out of preorder campaigns. This also includes constant support, so they always have access to any questions they may have throughout the month. Here at Poison Oak Press, we are also firm believers in bookish artwork, style, and marketing materials. We pay top dollar for the best character art, book covers, interior designs, and graphics so our authors can be as successful as possible.

-We specialize in Young Adult to New Adult fantasy with romance, mystery, dystopian, Sci-Fi, and thrillers.

-We are not the best fit for non-fiction, horror (especially anything paranormal outside of fantasy), hefty use of profanity (think every sentence), or multiple explicit sex scenes.

-While we don't specialize in contemporary romance, historical fiction, adult fiction, or novellas, if you want to work with us, then please still submit!

-We specialize in standalones, duologies, and trilogies. If your book is planned to be longer than a three-book series, we may not be the best fit.

-We do not accept anything that has been taken or plugged into any generative AI platforms.

What We Would Like to See More Of:

-Plot twists, relationships with a lot of banter, magical objects, games with high stakes, anything with royalty/kingdoms, underrated fairytale retellings, found family, and anything with tension and mystery that keeps readers up all night.

-We accept queries from agented and non-agented authors

-We accept queries from previously self-published manuscripts

How do I know when my manuscript is ready to query?

When querying a manuscript, it's always good to get it as done as possible. Many publishers have even suggested only querying when your manuscript is "Publish Ready." While we don't expect your manuscript to be perfect, we do expect it to be as completely done from your end as possible. When we read your queries, we want to be blown away by the story and the characters, and to have the passion to help put the energy and love into your soon-to-be-published manuscript! There should be no missing chapters or scenes that haven't been "written" yet. It must be presentable and complete. We also recommend that you have not only completed multiple self-editing drafts but also received and implemented feedback from beta readers who are not friends or family.

While there are many amazing indie presses out there for you to choose from, you can be rest assured that your manuscript will be safe in our hands. We will help turn your dream book into a beautiful published one you can hold in your hands! We also specialize in helping authors with their marketing strategies and their preorder campaigns to not just get the most from their release, but to also build as much book buzz on their platforms as possible. We know your books deserve the hype, and we are here to help you find your perfect audience. We offer 1:1 hands-on support with marketing, and have learned how to narrow down marketing to find the readers waiting for your book.

What creative freedom do you offer?

At Poison Oak Press we know the importance for you to fall in love with your book, the cover, and the marketing materials. We are here to turn this dream into a reality. We include you on all decisions made! While we know we can't make everyone happy on every aspect, please know that we keep you involved throughout the whole process including cover design, marketing plans and materials, implemented notes, and narrators (if applicable) to collect your opinions and feedback. We want you to love it all as much as we do!

What do preorder campaigns look like?

If you decide to do a preorder campaign, then this is what it would look like with us:

We will set your book up through the website and or TikTok shop.
There will be incentives for orders including freebies (bookmarks, art prints, e-books, etc)
We will create goals and have prizes for when they are reached (more freebies)
It will be during a set amount of time (whether one month or two months)
We could also possibly offer exclusive apparel (T-shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, etc!)

What marketing help do you offer?

We offer monthly 1:1 consultations and feedback (if desired). We want you to get hands-on and 1:1 support to get the most out of social media, email lists, and any ads (if applicable). We will look at your content, answer any questions, and give feedback and ideas on how to get more sales and growth on each of the platforms.
We are very hands-on during the preorder campaign process, and (if desired) we will sit down and make content plans with you so the preorder is as successful as possible. Here at Poison Oak Press, we have found that 70% of our yearly sales occur during preorder campaigns; therefore, it is important to put as much as possible into them.
Our authors get complete and free access to our vault of video-recorded trainings for social media, email lists, and other ways to sell. We want you to succeed!
While we do not put money into ads specifically at this time, we would be happy to look over any campaigns you create to help you get the most for your money.
